Electronic Dog Collar – a Quick Intro for Beginners

Some people think that the idea behind using electronic dog collar on dogs is to use painful electric shocks to instill fear, which in turn will make the dog afraid to engage in a particular behavior. Actually, if the point was to use pain, then the shocks delivered would be way above the voltage of the level actually used – which is lower than the static electricity one feels on carpets. But to a dog, such low volt shock is enough to jolt it out of its non-stop barking or any bad behavior it’s gotten the habit of doing over and over.

This says nothing at all about intense pain being necessary and therefore set at debilitating levels. Keep in mind here that the felt electric shock is only momentary and is lower than the static one feels when touching the door or the sides of a refrigerator. Any training regiment using static correction collars only aims to instill a learned, conditioned response – a bark is followed by an unpleasant experience.

There are two (2) kinds of shock or static correction collars. The collar triggered type is set off by your dog’s bark and the vibrations from the dog’s throat when it barks. This dual-sensing set up means no loud sound near your dog will set off the collar – only your dog’s bark will. Another kind makes use of a transmitter roughly the size of a small cellular phone – that unit is called the transmitter and the receiver in a device on a special dog collar. The first type – the bark-activated type – works indoors and outdoors, but works only to interrupt and suppress one particular behavior, which is barking.

Since there are many other dog behavior you may disapprove of – from merely annoying to disturbing – you’re going to need to the other type of collar. With a remote controlled collar, the moment you see your dog misbehave – start digging up garden soil, running to chase down cars on the street, etc. – so can immediately send the signal to the collar to release an annoying shock. That’s how useful remote dog collars can be – it can be used in any obedience training program. These programs include – hunting routines, pet containment, anti-barking, and agility training.

Dog collars aren’t limited to the static type, as others also use disruptive stimuli, but in other forms. The dog collars that do not make use of shocks as the behavior-disruptive stimuli use scented sprays or high pitched sounds.

Over time your dog links the shock from its electronic collar with the unwanted behavior – it’s a learned response that develops only over time. After a few hours spend with an electronic dog collar, you will notice that your dog still needs work – it will put on a funny face or look bewildered in an attempt to figure out where the shock is coming from.
